Founded in Chicago on December 3, 1880, the Svithiod Order was established by Swedish immigrants seeking community, connection, and support in a new country. It quickly became a central gathering place for Swedish Americans.
The name Svithiod comes from ancient origins, meaning “home of the Swedish people,” reflecting the club’s deep cultural roots and sense of belonging.
Over the years, the club has grown and evolved while staying true to its mission—bringing people together through social events, shared traditions, and community involvement. From its early days as a small, members-only organization, the club expanded its facilities, introduced events and activities, and eventually opened membership to all.
Through challenges like declining membership and financial strain, the club adapted—most notably in the 1980s when members came together to renovate the building and secure its future. Thanks to strong member support and volunteer efforts, the club not only survived but continued to grow.
Today, the Svithiod Club remains a vibrant community space, hosting events, gatherings, and traditions that bring people together. Built on a foundation of history, resilience, and member involvement, it continues to be a place where friendships are formed and community thrives.
